When i first started looking at booking my own ‘internal’ flights for our trip to the US, i found it difficult to find sites where i could compare US operators. Instead, i would get Australian flight search engines. They were OK, but didn’t offer a great range of American airlines however, after getting a couple of leads, I managed to find a great search engine that compared many American carriers. The great thing about that was I was able to go directly to that particular airlines ‘www’ and see if i could find the flight cheaper.

I’m going on to a slight tangent here. I’ll give you a couple of tips. Always compare the price you find on a search engine with the actual airlines website. At times, you may find you can save a few bucks by going direct to them. Sometimes, you will feel more comfortable or trusting dealing with the airline directly instead of a third party. In the end, do your research and find the best deal that suits you. Also make sure you understand the route and the times of the flights. The cheaper the flight, the ‘worst’ the flight conditions will be i.e. 2 or 3 stopovers and sometimes there is a lay over. A ‘layover’ is where you stay overnight and take your connecting flight the next day and will add a nights accommodation to your budget so again, do your research!

Back to the search engine. The one I use is called ‘Cheapflights.com’. You can click on the link below and go directly to their website. Their search engine takes you to different websites that compare the different airline prices. It’s pretty simple to use. Just put in your travel dates, times and amount of people and it will collate sites that you can go to that compare all the flights. Have a play and see how it works. As i mentioned, it’s simple to use.

Lastly below are a few points to be aware of when booking flights overseas.

  • Compare the search engine to the airlines actual website
  • Remember to check if there are any stopovers, how many and if any are overnight
  • Remember to check the flight times
  • If you are ready to book, then book it. The later you leave it, the more it will cost or you may miss out all together
  • Do your research!
